What kind of job are you looking for? How much do you want to be paid? How many hours are you intending to be working for in a week? But the most important question is, how do you get the job that you want? What industry are you passionate about? Are you looking for a part time job or a full time job? What does that even mean? So many questions right? Don’t worry...

Most people do struggle to get even an interview. Maybe you are one of them, and you are reading this article at the right time as we head towards the end of 2018. We are halfway through. Employers receive a very high number of job applications, CVs, Profiles and letters every single day, how do you make sure that yours is read and even scores you and interview to share more about yourself in front of a potential employee? Here are some of the few tips i would like to share with you (I will just share Tip 1 today):

Gain background information about your field

What industry are you into? Is it law, mining, agriculture, coaching, sales and marketing agencies? Be very clear on the field that you want to join and get as much information that you can about that field. Most people are just looking for ANY KIND OF JOB TO KEEP THEM BUSY, not you. Be very clear and specific about the job you want and narrow your searches on the companies and businesses that may be your potential clients.

For example, for the coaching business, as a young professional, you may read more and understand Prime Coaching. You can check about its structures, missions and visions. Check out its projected growth and it’s future programs and initiatives. Find out what aligns with your career goals and interest and pitch to the company’s management. Show how you are going to add value to the company and why you are the right person for the position you are looking for.

Learn more about the industry you want to be a part of. Read, Ask the questions to relevant people and continue on a personal quest journey for information.

Let me share my experience, as a young professional in 2016 i completed my studies in the field of Economics. I wanted to work for big corporate such as KPMG, InnoLead etc but did not have enough experience and knowledge about what they do. As a freshman from college i gathered as much information i could be. I started to do personal branding, sharing knowledge, attending events and sharing insights on the radio feature i started with Radio Botswana 2.

It helped me to meet with the people i needed to see and along the way, it helped me to structure and pitch a successful CV. I got two job offers within a period of 2 months. I turned down 1 and chose the other (i was very clear and specific with the job i needed and the amount of money i wished to be paid, hours of work and potential growth in my career).

So you can start today. Refine your CV, work on your engagement and interaction with your future potential employers. I am willing to work with you on that journey. Share with me your thoughts here and let’s see how to work together. I will share the second point tomorrow.
